Chambers & Phillips, Inc. employs mud rotary drilling. This method uses a rotating bit which cuts a bore hole, then the cuttings are removed with drilling fluids (mud).  Mud provides support for the bore hole as well as cools and lubricates the bit.

After the well is drilled and the casing and screen installed, the well is developed, then completed.  TCEQ (formerly TNRCC) has requirements and standards in each phase of the drilling and completing, as well as the types of structure which house the completed well.

Standard Parts of a Well

  • Well Casing
    • Supports the bore hole and helps protect the aquifer from contamination
    • TCEQ has requirements that must be met with casing being set
  • Well Screen
    • Prevents sand from entering the well
  • Gravel Pack
    • Not always a part of a well, gravel packing is often used in addition to the well screen.
  • Concrete Sealing Block
    • TCEQ requires a concrete sealing block extending at least 2 feet from the well casing in all directions, unless an approved alternative procedure is used.

Well Terminology

  • Cone of Depression:  cone-shaped, circular depression of de-watered aquifer that forms around a pumping well.
  • Circle of Influence:  the top surface area of the cone of depression.
  • Radius of Influence:  the distance from the center of the well to the top limit of the cone of depression
  • Static Level:  the water level in the well casing when the pump is off.  Measured from ground level.
  • Pumping Level:  the water level in the well casing when the pump is running.  Measured from ground level.
  • Drawdown:  the difference between static level and pumping level.
